Japan University Admission Requirements for Bangladeshi Students
The core requirement is simple: finish the right level of education, then show you can study in English or Japanese. Rules differ by university and program, so use the lists below as a starting point.
Bachelor's admission requirements
- Completed HSC (12 years of schooling), with SSC and HSC mark sheets and certificates.
- Language proof. English-taught programs usually ask for IELTS or TOEFL. Japanese-taught programs usually ask for JLPT (often N2 or N1) and sometimes the EJU.
- Good results in the subjects linked to your major, especially English and Mathematics.
- An entrance exam, interview or document screening, depending on the university.
Not all Japanese universities need an entrance exam in Japan. Many accept applications by document screening and an online interview. Check each program page.
Master's admission requirements
- A bachelor's degree, or 16 years of schooling. A 4-year honours degree usually fits.
- A strong CGPA. For the MEXT Embassy route, the Embassy page asks for first-class results (60% or a 3.5 CGPA out of 4).
- A research plan that matches a professor's field.
- English or Japanese proof, if the program asks for it.
PhD admission requirements
- A master's degree, or 18 years of schooling.
- A research proposal and, in most cases, a professor who agrees to supervise you.
- Published or thesis work, if the lab asks for it.
- Language proof, depending on the lab.

Can you get in without IELTS? Often yes. Some graduate programs accept a university's own English interview, a medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter, or Japanese proof instead. Always confirm with the program, because each one decides for itself.
Age limits
There is no single age limit for admission. The MEXT scholarship does set one: research students must be under 35, and undergraduate applicants must be 17 to 25, both counted on April 1 of the award year.

How to Apply to Japanese Universities from Bangladesh: Step by Step
The whole process usually takes six to nine months, depending on the intake. Start at least a year before you want to fly. Here is the path from first search to arrival.
- Pick your level and field. Decide on a bachelor's, master's or PhD, then shortlist 5 to 8 programs. Use the official Study in Japan school search to filter by major, location and language of instruction.
- Check each program's rules. Note the language requirement, the application window, the fees and the documents. Write them in one sheet.
- Contact a professor (graduate students). Email a short, polite message with your CV, transcript and research interest. Most graduate offers start with a professor who agrees to supervise you.
- Prepare your research plan or statement of purpose. Keep it clear and specific to the lab. Generic plans get rejected.
- Submit the application and pay the fee. Most universities now take online applications. Some still ask for originals later.
- Take the entrance exam or interview. Graduate programs often use a document review plus an online interview. Undergraduate programs may use the EJU, a school exam or both.
- Receive the offer and pay the first fees. The offer letter is the key to the next step.
- The university applies for your COE. After that, you apply for the student visa in Dhaka. See the visa section below.
Applying for graduate study (master's and PhD)
The graduate route works differently from the bachelor's route. Your professor matters more than the university's name.
- Find supervisors on the university's faculty pages and read their recent papers.
- Send one focused email per professor. Mention a specific paper and say how your work connects.
- Ask whether they accept research students first (kenkyusei). Some students enter as a research student and sit the entrance exam later.
- Ask about English-taught programs if you do not speak Japanese.
- Apply for scholarships alongside admission, not after it.
Admission to technical universities and colleges of technology
Technical universities and kosen (colleges of technology) focus on engineering and applied science. The Embassy's MEXT page lists the college of technology route for ages 17 to 25, with a GPA of 5 in both SSC and HSC and A+ in English, Mathematics and Physics. The written exam covers English, Japanese, and a science or maths subject linked to your major. Competition is high, so build your maths and science scores early.
The EJU exam: do you need it, and where do you take it?
The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) is run by JASSO. It is meant for students who want to enter an undergraduate program in Japan. It tests Japanese as a foreign language, Science, Japan and the World, and Mathematics. You pick the subjects your target university asks for.
In 2026 the exam ran on 21 June and 8 November. JASSO's list of overseas venues does not include Dhaka or any city in Bangladesh. If your target university needs the EJU, check the university's page for alternatives, and ask whether it accepts its own exam or other proof instead. Check the current JASSO venue list before you plan.

Documents Required for Japan University Admission
Missing papers are the most common reason applications get delayed. Prepare this set early, and keep scans and photocopies of everything.
- Passport (valid, with a clear photo page)
- Application form from the university
- SSC and HSC certificates and mark sheets (bachelor's)
- Bachelor's and master's certificates and transcripts (graduate study)
- Language test report (IELTS, TOEFL, JLPT, NAT-TEST or EJU)
- Statement of purpose or research plan
- Recommendation letters (usually two, for graduate study)
- CV and passport-size photos
- Proof of funds or a sponsor's financial documents
- Application fee payment receipt
Some universities also ask for a health certificate, a portfolio or a thesis summary. Read the application guide for each program, because lists differ.
Translation and attestation in Bangladesh
Japanese universities accept English documents in most cases. If a university asks for Japanese, use a certified translator. Some programs also want attested or notarized copies. Ask the admissions office what they accept before you pay for attestation.
Sending documents to Japan
Many universities now accept PDFs through an online portal and ask for originals only after an offer. When they do need paper, use a tracked international courier such as DHL or FedEx, and share the tracking number with the admissions office. Always keep a copy of what you send.
Proof of funds
The Embassy of Japan in Dhaka lists a six-month bank statement from your financial supporter and three years of the supporter's tax certificates and payment receipts for language school applicants. University applicants should check what their university and the Embassy ask for. If your supporter is not a parent, you also need papers that prove the relationship, such as a family tree with passport copies, a NID card or a Nikahnama.
Japanese Universities That Accept Bangladeshi Students
Japan has national, public and private universities, and all of them can admit international students. National and public universities charge lower tuition and are the usual target for graduate study. Private universities cost more but often have more English-taught programs and more intakes.

|
Private |
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Soka University, Waseda University, Keio University |
More English-taught programs, flexible intakes |
These are examples, not a ranking or a guarantee of admission. Programs, intakes and English-taught options change every year, so confirm on each university's international admissions page. To search by major, location and language of instruction, use the official Study in Japan school search.
How to choose
- Language of instruction. Filter for English-taught programs if you do not yet speak Japanese.
- Tuition. National and public universities cost less than most private ones.
- Location. Living costs in Tokyo are higher than in regional cities.
- Research fit (graduate students). The professor's field matters more than the university's rank.
Cost of Studying in Japan from Bangladesh (in BDT)
A national university costs about BDT 4.3 lakh a year in tuition, plus a one-time entrance fee of about BDT 2.3 lakh. Private universities cost more. Living costs come on top. BDT figures below use a rough rate of BDT 0.8 per yen. Check the live rate before you plan, because it moves.

The Tsukuba page says tuition will be revised from academic year 2027, so confirm the new amount before you budget. MEXT scholarship holders are exempt from the examination fee there, and many universities have their own waivers.
Living costs
Monthly costs depend on your city, your housing and your lifestyle. Rent is the biggest item, and Tokyo costs more than regional cities. Your budget should cover rent, food, transport, health insurance and phone. JASSO publishes a student life survey with current averages, and your university's international office usually lists a typical monthly budget.
Part-time work
Students on a student visa can work part-time after they receive permission, up to 28 hours a week during term. Part-time income helps with daily costs, but it should not be your main plan to pay tuition. Tell the Embassy and the university the truth about your funding.
Student loan and funding options
- Scholarships and tuition waivers. Apply first, because they reduce the amount you need to borrow.
- Bank education loans in Bangladesh. Compare the interest rate, repayment start date and any collateral rules between banks.
- Family sponsor. The most common route. Your sponsor needs clear bank and tax records.
- Overseas remittance rules. Check Bangladesh Bank rules on sending tuition abroad before you pay.
Ask for a written cost breakdown (tuition, housing, insurance, fees) before you pay any agent or university.
Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students in Japan
The main route is the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, and it has two ways in: the Embassy recommendation and the University recommendation. Other options include JASSO support and tuition waivers from universities.
MEXT scholarship routes
|
Route |
How it works |
Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
|
Embassy recommendation |
Apply through the Ministry of Education in Bangladesh, then take a written exam and interview. The Embassy selects candidates, then MEXT makes the final selection. |
Research (master's, PhD), undergraduate, college of technology |
|
University recommendation |
Apply to a Japanese university, which screens candidates and recommends some to MEXT. |
Research and undergraduate students who already have a target university |
Per the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka, the Embassy route is advertised in April and submitted in May. Written exams and interviews run June to July, and the final MEXT selection comes between December and January. University recommendation applications usually open in November to December and close in January to February.
Key MEXT eligibility points
- Research students: under 35 on 1 April of the award year, a bachelor's degree (master's applicants) or master's degree (doctoral applicants), and first-class results (60% or a 3.5 CGPA out of 4).
- Undergraduate students: aged 17 to 25 on 1 April. Science applicants need a GPA of 5 in SSC and HSC plus A+ in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Humanities applicants need a GPA of 4.5 plus A+ in English and Mathematics.
- Exams: the research route tests English and Japanese. The undergraduate route also tests mathematics and science subjects.
Important: the Embassy page we checked carries a 2020 date and 2021 guidelines. The rules are likely similar each year, but deadlines, ages and subjects can change. Check the Embassy's current notice before you apply.
Other funding
- University tuition waivers or reductions. Many universities offer these to strong international applicants. Ask at the time of application.
- JASSO and private scholarships. Search the Study in Japan scholarship tool for awards from schools, local governments and private organizations.
How to improve your chances
- Keep your CGPA high and prepare for the written exam early.
- Learn basic Japanese. Even N5 or N4 helps in the exam and in daily life.
- Contact professors before the deadline, not after.
- Start the research plan months ahead and have a teacher review it.
- Never pay anyone who guarantees a scholarship. MEXT selection is decided by MEXT and the Embassy.
Japan Student Visa and University Application Process for Bangladeshi Students
You cannot get a student visa without a university offer and a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). The order matters: offer first, COE second, visa last. Here is how the Japan student visa and university application process for Bangladeshi students fits together.
- Get your offer letter. The university confirms your admission and tells you about the fees to pay.
- The university applies for your COE. In most cases the school applies to Japan's immigration office on your behalf. You send the documents it asks for, including proof of how you will pay for your studies.
- Receive the COE. The university sends it to you, usually as a PDF or on paper. Processing time varies by season and office, and it commonly takes one to three months. Plan for delays.
- Apply for the student visa in Dhaka. Submit your passport, COE and the rest of the document set to the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh.
- Receive your visa, then book your flight. Collect your passport with the visa and prepare for arrival.
Documents for the student visa
From the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh's document list, the study (college or university) category asks for:
- Completed application form
- Valid passport and photocopy, plus old passports if any
- One photo (2 x 1.4 inches)
- COE (not required for Japanese Government scholarship awardees)
- Resume (not required for scholarship awardees)
- Acceptance letter from the Japanese institution
- Original academic certificates and photo registration cards
- Proof of financial capability
- Tuition payment and remittance receipts, if you have paid
- Airline booking slip
Submit one set, and photocopies must be on A4 paper. The Embassy does not return originals, so submit notarized copies if you cannot part with an original. An incomplete application will not be accepted, and the Embassy may ask for more documents.
Official website and where to apply
The official source is the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh visa section. Check it for the current form, fees and whether you submit directly or through an application centre. Do not rely on social media posts or agent pages for the fee or the process, because they go out of date.
Common reasons for visa refusal
- Incomplete or inconsistent documents
- Unclear source of funds, or a sponsor who cannot explain the money
- A study plan that does not match your past education
- Answers at the interview that differ from your application
Be honest, keep your papers consistent and rehearse your study plan in your own words.
Visa help services
Agents and consultants can check your documents and prepare you for the interview. They cannot influence the Embassy's decision, and no honest agent can guarantee a visa. Ask what is included in writing.
Preparing for Admission: Japanese Language and Exam Courses
Language is the biggest skill gap for most applicants. Even for English-taught programs, basic Japanese makes daily life, part-time work and job hunting much easier.
- Japanese language courses in Bangladesh. Look for JLPT N5 and N4 classes, and aim higher (N3, N2) if you plan a Japanese-taught program. Ask for a trial class and a clear syllabus.
- IELTS or TOEFL preparation. Needed for English-taught programs. Book your test date early, because reports take time.
- Entrance exam preparation. For the MEXT written exam and EJU, practise past papers in English, Mathematics and your science subjects.
- Online and in-person. Online classes are cheaper and flexible. In-person classes give you speaking practice.
Do You Need an Agent? How to Choose a Reliable Consultant
You can apply on your own, and many students do. A good consultant saves time on documents, language, professor emails and visa preparation. A bad one costs you money and months. Use this checklist before you sign.
Questions to ask any consultancy
- Do you have a trade license and a physical office? Can I visit?
- What exactly is included in your fee, and what is extra? Is it all in writing?
- Can I speak to past students and verify their results?
- Who writes my statement of purpose and research plan? (It should be you, with guidance.)
- What happens if my application or visa is refused?
Red flags
- Guaranteed admission, scholarship or visa
- Pressure to pay a large amount before any document review
- No written contract or receipt
- Vague answers about universities, or only private universities with high fees
- Fake or recycled success stories
Online counseling and education fairs
Online counseling is useful for a first opinion. Education fairs let you meet university representatives, but treat them as a starting point and confirm everything on the university's own site.

Common Mistakes in Japan University Admission
- Starting too late. Most applications need 9 to 12 months of preparation.
- Emailing professors in bulk. Generic emails get ignored. Personalize every message.
- Weak research plan. A vague plan can sink a strong CGPA.
- Missing deadlines. The MEXT Embassy window closes once a year.
- Ignoring Japanese. Even a basic level widens your options and your daily life.
- Poor financial documents. Unclear source of funds is a top cause of visa trouble.
- Trusting social media costs. Always check fees on official university and Embassy pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get admission to a Japanese university without IELTS?
Often yes. Some programs accept Japanese proof, an interview, or a medium-of-instruction letter instead of IELTS. Each university decides for itself, so confirm with the program before you apply.
Can I apply directly to a Japanese university from Bangladesh?
Yes. Most universities take international applications online. Graduate applicants usually need a professor's agreement first. You can also apply through the MEXT university recommendation route.
What is the minimum qualification for Japan university admission?
For a bachelor's degree, you need HSC (12 years of schooling). For a master's, you need a bachelor's degree (16 years). For a PhD, you need a master's degree (18 years).
How long does the admission process take?
Plan for six to nine months from your first application to arrival, and start earlier if you want a scholarship. The COE step alone can take one to three months.
Can I study in Japan after HSC?
Yes. HSC graduates can apply for bachelor's programs, language schools and some college of technology programs. Some programs also ask for JLPT, EJU or IELTS.
Is the MEXT scholarship guaranteed?
No. MEXT scholarships are competitive and decided by MEXT and the Embassy. Anyone who guarantees one is not telling the truth.
How much does it cost to study at a Japanese national university?
University of Tsukuba, as one example, lists an entrance fee of ¥282,000 and annual tuition of ¥535,800 for AY2026, about BDT 2.3 lakh and BDT 4.3 lakh at a rough rate. Tuition changes from 2027, and living costs come on top.
Do I need the EJU?
Only if your target undergraduate program asks for it. JASSO does not list a Dhaka venue, so check your university for other options.
Can I work while studying in Japan?
Yes, with permission, up to 28 hours a week during term. It helps with living costs but should not be your main source of funds.
Is Japan cheaper than the US, UK or Australia?
Often yes for tuition at national universities, but total cost depends on the city, housing and scholarships. Compare full written breakdowns, not only tuition.
